Patent Bar Exam Study Tips
Studies have shown that individuals who don't succeed usually either did not invest enough time in their studies, or invested their time in outdated and ineffective learning strategies.
One of the problems is that the material you need to learn to pass the Patent Bar exam is very complex. It isn't enough to just sit and passively listen to someone explain it. Although that can seem very convenient, it probably won't prepare you as well. You need to actively do something in order to really grasp the complexities. That's why we provide you with quizzes, a workbook, and test software in our Patent Bar review course. The difficulty of the information and questions increases as you progress through our system.
Here are a few tips for preparing for the Patent Bar Exam:
- When you're sitting down to study, make sure you have all your materials handy. For example, if you're using our program you would want the manuals you are currently using (i.e. Volume 1, 2, 3, or 4 of the Guidebook) along with the Glossary and your Prep Workbook. This way you don't have to hunt for the books you need and more importantly, you won't be tempted to skip out on looking up the meaning of a crucial term because you don't want to get up to find your glossary.
- Be sure to learn the general concepts first. Do not worry about learning the details until you grasp the fundamentals. We have summarized the main concepts for you in the Basic Patent TrainingT course. That way you can get the basics before moving on. It's like building a structure of any kind, you start out with the foundation (usually the basement) before you ever get to anything substantial.
- While studying, take some notes and write down the most important ideas. It is wise to write out a summary. The trick is - it's absolutely necessary for YOU to write it down in your own words. It never seems to work as well if someone else writes it out for you and you just read it.
- Give yourself enough time to prepare for the exam. This will help you keep a positive attitude. If you start to run low on time then you will be much more stressed out. It is easier to study when you're relaxed than if you wait until it may be too late. The Patent
Bar exam covers a large amount of material, so give yourself plenty of time to prepare for it before even setting a test date.
- Focus on learning the most important material. Spend more of your time on what will get you the most points on the exam. Our Guidebook to Patent Law rates the chapters by their importance on the exam and only covers the tested material. That way you can spend more time on the most often tested material rather than waste your time learning what isn't going to be tested.
- Take at least one 5 minute break an hour while you're studying. This will help your brain relax. If you study intently for hours on end you may be surprised at how little you remember. We all have a threshold. Just be sure to give your mind a break now and then so you are at your peak while reviewing the material.
- While you're preparing for the exam, you need to break up your ultimate goal (passing the exam) into smaller, more manageable components. For instance, get through Chapter 100 by Thursday, etc. Our lesson plan will enable you to break up the material into more manageable chunks. When you realize you're progressing, it will help give you the momentum you need to keep moving forward.
Getting started can be the hardest part for many. Everyone has heard just how difficult the Patent Bar exam is so passing it can seem daunting. But seriously. it's a 100 point multiple choice exam. And remember, you do get to review the MPEP (the source of all the laws and rules) during the exam.
Now, we're not trivializing the exam, but we can guarantee that it is well within your reach. After all, you probably have a degree (or even two or three) in science or engineering. These are difficult subjects as well and there's no doubt you had to take dozens (if not more) 100 point multiple choice exams to get your degree. So there's no reason to believe you're not up for this one as well! Relax . you can do it!
The best way to tackle an exam like the Patent Bar exam is to develop a plan. And conveniently enough, we've already done that for you. Just follow our lesson plan. Do one thing at a time. All projects seem easier when they're broken down into stages.
So you should set a schedule depending on how much time you have per week. What specific days of the week and times will you set aside for studying for this exam? Even just 2-3 days a week for 2 hours a session is enough to get the ball rolling.
You need to start out with the basics, and build up to the detail and complexity as you move along. If you follow our lesson plan, you will be exposed to a gradual increase in the complexity of the material.
This will definitely keep you less stressed out. And you will be reviewing the old material as you learn the new. It's a great way to really cement the details in your mind.
