Step II - Guidebooks to Patent Law & Workbook
Delve Into the Details of the MPEP With These Time-Saving Manuals
This is Step II of our Patent Bar review course. Our course walks you through the basics first, then the details of patent law, and lastly you take practice exam questions. This article covers Step II where you learn the details of patent law.
The Patent Bar exam is based on the MPEP. If you've taken a look at this manual, then you already know it's not a fun read. The MPEP is over 3,000 pages in length, with tiny font presented in double-columns on each page. It includes forms, laws and rules in their entirety, and citations to court rulings.
It's not a study guide, but a legal document put out by the government as a source for patent law.
What we have done is distill the tested material from the MPEP and put it in an easy to understand outline format for you. We've included 'At a Glance' tables, key points, and the tested laws/rules. This greatly reduces the amount of material you need to cover.
In fact, we've estimated that reading the Guidebooks to Patent Law cuts out at least 90% of the extraneous material found in the MPEP. Therefore, you will save at least 10 times as much of your valuable time by reviewing our Guidebooks over the MPEP for the Patent Bar exam. It's also almost certain that you will have a better grasp of the tested material by reviewing the Guidebooks since they focus only on what the exam covers.
In our opinion, the MPEP is not a valid study tool for this exam. This goes for study guides that are essentially a re-write of the MPEP and those that expect you to read it. Our 4-Volume Guidebook set took about 14 months to create. When the exam is updated we spend a minimum of 100 hours to update our manuals. So obviously, they are not a rehash of the MPEP.
In Step II, you will review the material in the Guidebook along with answering the questions in the Workbook. The Workbook includes each chapter just like those in the Guidebook. The questions are short answer, fill-in-the blank, and true/false. All answers are included. The Workbook also includes an outline of the chapter along with key objectives and terms you need to know.
When you begin Step II, we suggest you read through a chapter in the Guidebook, then answer the corresponding Workbook questions (you may use the Guidebooks while answering the questions, think of it as an 'open-book' quiz). This way you are actively doing something and not just passively reading. Answering the questions will really cement this complex material in your mind.

Complete the Workbook for each chapter found in the Guidebooks and you will have a solid preparation for the Patent Bar exam. The final step to our program (Step III) is reviewing practice exam questions which will give you the confidence you need to pass the exam. For this, we've developed our PatExam Engine™ software.
