You may already have what it takes

If you have a background in science, engineering, or design, you may already be qualified to enter a field that most people don’t even know exists. Here’s what this free series covers:

  • What the career actually involves: what patent agents and patent attorneys do, day to day.
  • Whether you qualify: who’s eligible to take the patent bar exam, and why a law degree isn’t required.
  • What the patent bar exam is: format, fees, and what to expect.
  • Why it’s a rare kind of career change: it builds on the technical education and experience you already have. No new degree needed.
  • How people pass it: including those with no prior legal background.

Why this matters

Most career changes mean starting over. You need a new degree, student loans, and years of lost income. Patent law is one of the few that doesn’t. If you qualify, the path is straightforward: study for the patent bar exam, pass it, and register.

Most people prepare in 3 to 12 months, often while keeping their current job. This video series is designed to help you decide whether that path is right for you before you commit to anything.

From people who made the switch

“I’m a recent PhD graduate in genetics and molecular biology. I want to work as a patent agent, but I was a little worried about taking the patent bar without having the context of being in the field already. I prepared for the exam using PES exclusively, and it was great — I got my provisional pass today!”

— Recent PhD graduate, genetics and molecular biology

“I passed the patent bar on my first attempt. I’ve been a practicing electrical engineer in chip design for 20 years with no formal legal training. The PES course did a great job of presenting a massive amount of material in a way that someone without a legal background could digest. I’d highly recommend it to any engineers looking to pass the patent bar.”

— Practicing electrical engineer, 20 years in chip design

“I passed the patent bar exam after five months of studying using the Patent Education Series materials. I had no previous practical experience with or knowledge of intellectual property law or patent prosecution. I found PES’s patent bar review course to be a great value and would recommend it.”

— Meenal Deshmukh, Registered Patent Practitioner
